It’s normal to want to avoid unsettling feelings and emotions. When sadness, fear, or shame creeps in, our first reaction is often to reject the feeling.
Sometimes, we try to push the feeling away or numb ourselves using our preferred escape tactics— alcohol, drugs, media, or becoming consumed with our work.
An alternative to ignoring your emotions is learning to accept your full emotional experience for the beauty and wisdom that it offers. Accepting means that you practice allowing your emotions to be what they are without judging them or trying to change them.
By accepting, you are not resigning yourself or your life to be dictated by your emotions. You are simply letting go of the struggle, so that you can be free to listen, create, and shape the story of your life with intentionality and power.
